Troubleshoot the TikTok spam_risk publishing error

When publishing a post to TikTok through Birdeye, you may see the following error:

Error: status: FAILED, reason: spam_risk

TikTok flagged this post as a spam risk and blocked it from publishing. Open the TikTok app to check for any notifications, then try again. TikTok Error - spam_risk

What it means

TikTok accepted the publishing request, but its Trust & Safety systems blocked the post before it went live.

This is a TikTok-side moderation decision, not a Birdeye error. TikTok Error - spam_risk

TikTok's API only returns the generic spam_risk reason and does not identify the specific reason why the post was blocked. TikTok Error - spam_risk

Why it happens

TikTok may flag a post as a spam risk for reasons such as:

  • The caption or text is considered spammy, such as having excessive hashtags, links, or promotional language.

  • Too many posts have been published from the account within a 24-hour period.

  • The account has been restricted from posting.

  • TikTok's risk-scoring systems have flagged the post or account without a specific attributable cause. TikTok Error - spam_risk

TikTok does not disclose which of these factors caused a specific spam_risk failure. TikTok Error - spam_risk

What to do

  1. Check the TikTok app for any notification or appeal option associated with the account.

  2. Do not immediately republish the same content.

  3. If the caption contains many hashtags, links, or promotional language, simplify the caption and try again later.

  4. If several posts were published within a short period, space out subsequent posts.

  5. If there is no notification in the TikTok app and the error persists, contact TikTok Support directly. The issue may be related to an account-level restriction that is not visible to Birdeye or TikTok API Support. TikTok Error - spam_risk
