Akamai Datastream2 Integration with Website Analytics Setup Guide

Overview

The Akamai Datastream2 integration allows you to stream CDN log data directly to Search AI Website Analytics for monitoring and analysis. Akamai Datastream2 supports real-time log delivery to external destinations, including HTTP endpoints.

This integration helps track how AI platforms crawl, interpret, and interact with your website content.

For additional details about Akamai Datastream2, refer to the official Akamai documentation.

Prerequisites

Before configuring the integration, ensure you have the following:

  • An active Akamai account with Datastream2 enabled

  • Access to your Akamai Datastream2 configuration settings

  • A Website Analytics Key and Endpoint generated in Birdeye Search AI Website Analytics

Configuration

Before configuring Akamai Datastream2 integration, make sure Website Analytics is already set up in Birdeye.

To learn how to configure Website Analytics, refer to the article: How to Configure Website Analytics and View Setup Guides.

You can then use the setup details provided in the Birdeye dashboard to complete the Akamai Datastream2 integration.

Step 1: Create a New Datastream in Akamai

Sign in to the Akamai Control Center and open the Datastream section from the navigation menu.

To create a new stream:

  1. Open the Datastream dashboard

  2. Click Create a stream

  3. Select the appropriate stream type based on your CDN configuration

This stream will be used to forward CDN log data to Search AI Website Analytics for processing and reporting.

Step 2: Select the Property for Log Collection

Choose the Akamai property you want to monitor and include in the datastream configuration.

To continue:

  1. Select the appropriate property from the available list

  2. Verify the hostname or delivery configuration linked to the property

  3. Click Next to proceed to the dataset configuration step

The selected property will be used to stream CDN request and response logs into Search AI Website Analytics.

Step 3: Configure Log and Data Fields

Select the log fields that should be included in your Akamai DataStream configuration. These fields help Website Analytics capture request activity, response details, and performance metrics from your CDN traffic.

Under the Log information section, enable:

  • Request time

Under Message exchange data, select:

  • Client IP

  • HTTP status code

  • Request host

  • Request method

  • Request path

  • Response Content-Type

  • User-Agent

  • Query string

  • Total bytes

Under Request header data, enable:

  • Referer

Under Network performance data, select:

  • Turn around time

For the Log format section, keep the default format selected unless your implementation requires a different structure.

These fields allow Search AI Website Analytics to process request details, traffic sources, response behavior, and performance insights more effectively.

Step 4: Configure the Destination Settings

Configure the destination and authentication details for the Akamai DataStream2 integration.

  1. From the Destination dropdown, select Custom HTTPS.

  2. Set Authentication to BASIC.

  3. In the Endpoint URL field, enter the following Search AI Website Analytics endpoint:

  1. In the Username field, enter your organization name.

  2. In the Password field, enter the Website Analytics Key from your Birdeye dashboard:

bot_iN84tVHqs5jIkza6CqG7XypO45wjiJ1pJnNTSoWLXkA

  1. Enable Send compressed data to optimize log delivery performance.

Step 5: Select the Log Format

Set the log format to ensure Akamai DataStream2 sends logs in a structured format compatible with Search AI Website Analytics.

  1. Under the Log format section, select JSON from the dropdown menu.

  2. Review the sample log line, if available, to confirm the format is correctly applied.

Step 6: Configure the Push Frequency

Set how frequently Akamai sends log batches to the Website Analytics endpoint.

  1. Under Delivery options, locate the Push frequency setting.

  2. Select 30 seconds from the dropdown menu.

  3. Review the destination details and confirm the correct Website Analytics destination is selected.

Step 7: Review and Save the Configuration

Review the DataStream2 configuration before saving the stream.

  1. Verify that the selected datasets, delivery settings, and destination configuration match your Website Analytics integration requirements.

  2. Confirm the following settings:

    • Log format is set to JSON

    • Destination type is Custom HTTPS

    • Authentication type is BASIC

    • Push frequency is set to 30 seconds

    • Compression is enabled

  3. Review the destination endpoint and ensure the Website Analytics stream configuration is correct.

  4. Click Save stream to create the DataStream2 integration.

  5. After the stream is created, after a couple of hours return to the Birdeye Search AI Website Analytics dashboard and click Verify connection to confirm logs are being received successfully.

Step 8: Activate the Stream

After creating the stream, you will be prompted to activate it. Click Proceed to Property Manager and select the property associated with your Website Analytics stream.

Once the property is selected, enable the DataStream behavior and apply the required logging configuration to begin forwarding Akamai logs to Search AI Website Analytics.

NOTE:

Stream activation can take up to 60 minutes to complete across the Akamai production network.

Step 9: Add the DataStream Behavior to Your Property

Click Edit a new version to add the stream to your property configuration.

Navigate to the Property Configuration Settings page and select Standard property behavior from the + Behavior dropdown menu.

Search for DataStream and click Insert Behavior.

NOTE:

The behavior panel may initially display DataStream 1. This is expected. You will select the correct stream version in the next step.

Step 10: Configure the DataStream Settings

Scroll down to the DataStream section and configure the following settings:

  • Select DataStream 2 from the Stream version dropdown.

  • Toggle Enable to On.

  • Select Website Analytics Stream from the Stream names field.

  • Set the Sampling rate to 100% for complete log collection.

Step 11: Configure Log Delivery Headers

Select Log Delivery from the left sidebar.

Enable the following options under Log Request Details:

  • Log Host Header

  • Log Referer Header

  • Log User-Agent Header

Step 12: Save and Activate the Configuration

Click Save to save the property configuration changes and activate the new version.

Once activated, Akamai will begin forwarding real-time website analytics logs to your Website Analytics dashboard. Data may begin appearing within approximately 60 minutes.

Troubleshooting

If data does not appear in your dashboard, verify the following:

  • The DataStream configuration is activated successfully

  • The property version has been activated in Property Manager

  • The correct endpoint and Log Ingestion Token were used

  • The DataStream behavior is enabled on the correct property version

Additional Resources

Security Considerations

  • Rotate Log Ingestion Tokens periodically

  • Restrict access to endpoint credentials

  • Monitor log traffic for unexpected spikes or anomalies

  • Use HTTPS for all delivery endpoints

  • Review property changes before activation to prevent accidental configuration issues
