Surveys help you collect customer feedback that can guide business and product decisions. With Birdeye, you can customize your surveys to show respondents only the questions that are relevant to their responses.
Skip logic lets you control the flow of a survey by automatically taking respondents to a specific question based on their answer to a previous question. This helps you skip questions that aren't relevant to a respondent and create a more personalized survey experience.
For example, if you ask a respondent which service they used most recently and they select Something else, you can configure skip logic to take them directly to a later question instead of showing them questions related to the other services.
How does Skip logic work?
Skip logic uses an If...Then flow:
If a respondent's answer meets a specified condition, then the survey skips to the question you select.
You can configure skip logic based on two types of conditions:
Questions — Use a respondent's answer to another survey question as the condition.
Custom field — Use a contact-based custom field value as the condition.
NOTE:
Skip logic based on custom fields is supported only for survey campaign distribution. It does not apply to anonymous links or previews.
Set up Skip logic based on a survey question
You can use a respondent's answer to a survey question to determine which question they see next.
For example, consider a survey with the following questions:
Q1: How likely are you to recommend [Business Name] to a friend or colleague?
Q2: Which of our services have you used most recently?
Q3: Please rate your experience with us on the following.
Q4: How long have you been a customer of [Business Name]?
If a respondent selects Something else for Q2, you can configure the survey to skip Q3 and take the respondent directly to Q4.
To set up question-based skip logic:
In your survey, select the question for which you want to configure skip logic.
In the question settings panel, under Logic, click Skip logic.
In the Skip logic window, click Add condition.
Select Questions from the list of condition types.
Select the survey question whose response you want to use as the condition.
Select the comparison operator, such as is, is not, is greater than, or is less than, depending on the question type.
Select or enter the response that should trigger the skip logic.
Under Then skip to, select the question you want the respondent to go to when the condition is met.
For example, you can configure the logic to skip to Q4 when the respondent selects Something else for Q2.
Click Save.
The configured skip logic is displayed below the question so you can review the rule before publishing the survey.
Set up Skip logic based on a custom field
You can also use a contact-based custom field as a condition for skip logic. This allows you to determine the survey flow based on information already associated with the contact.
For example, if a contact has a custom field called Installation Complete, you can configure skip logic based on whether that field is set to True.
NOTE:
Skip logic based on custom fields is supported only for survey campaign distribution. It does not apply to anonymous links or previews.
To set up custom-field-based skip logic:
Select the survey question for which you want to configure skip logic.
Under Logic, click Skip logic.
In the Skip logic window, click Add condition.
Select Custom field.
Select the contact-based custom field you want to use as the condition.
Select the appropriate comparison operator.
Select or enter the value that should trigger the skip logic.
Under Then skip to, select the question you want the respondent to go to when the condition is met.
For example, you can configure the logic as:
If "Installation Complete" equals "True", then skip to "Q3: Please rate your experience with us on the following."
Click Save to apply the skip logic.
Add multiple skip logic conditions
You can add multiple conditions to create different paths through your survey.
For example, you can configure different skip destinations depending on the respondent's answer to a question.
When adding conditions, use Add condition to add another rule and configure the appropriate response and destination question.
Make sure the conditions and destination questions are configured according to the flow you want respondents to follow.
Important considerations
Skip logic can take respondents directly to another question based on the configured condition.
A question that is skipped may not receive a response from the respondent, even if the question is marked as Required.
Multiple skip logic rules can be configured within a survey.
Skip logic based on custom fields works only when the survey is distributed through a survey campaign.
Custom-field-based skip logic does not apply to anonymous links or survey previews.
Review the configured skip logic before publishing your survey to ensure respondents are directed to the intended questions.
NOTE:
Because multiple skip logic rules can be configured in a survey, a single-page survey can effectively behave like a multi-page survey based on the respondent's answers. For multi-page surveys, partial responses are also recorded. Therefore, a mandatory question can be skipped because of skip logic and may not have a response, including in single-page surveys.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between Display Logic and Skip Logic?
Display logic: Display logic determines whether a particular question is shown based on a respondent's previous response. It is useful when you want to display an additional question only when a specific condition is met.
Skip logic: Skip logic takes the respondent directly to another question when a specified condition is met. It allows you to skip questions that are not relevant to the respondent's response.
For example, display logic can be used to show a follow-up question when a respondent selects a particular answer, while skip logic can be used to jump to a different question and bypass questions that are not relevant.
When should I use Skip Logic?
Use skip logic when:
Certain questions are not relevant based on a respondent's previous answer.
You want to direct respondents to different parts of the survey based on their responses.
You want to reduce unnecessary questions for respondents.
You want to collect more relevant feedback by creating different survey paths.
What types of conditions can I use with Skip Logic?
You can add skip logic conditions based on:
Questions — Use responses to questions within the survey.
Custom field — Use contact-based custom field values.
Can I use custom-field-based Skip Logic with anonymous links?
No. Custom-field-based skip logic is supported only for survey campaign distribution and does not apply to anonymous links or previews.
Can a required question be skipped?
Yes. A mandatory question can be skipped when a configured skip logic condition directs the respondent to another question. As a result, the skipped question may not have a response.
