How can I use Display Logic while creating a survey?

With Birdeye, you can create smarter customer surveys that show relevant questions based on specific conditions. Display logic lets you control when a question appears based on a respondent's answer to another survey question or information stored in their contact custom fields.

How does display logic work:

Display logic lets you control when a survey question is displayed based on specific conditions. You can create conditions based on a respondent's answers to survey questions or on their contact custom fields. This tool helps you collect more relevant information by displaying questions based on the configured conditions.

For example, you can display a follow-up question when a respondent selects a specific answer to a survey question. You can also display a question based on information stored in the respondent's contact profile, such as an amount paid, date, status, or another contact custom field.

Set up display logic based on a survey question

Example: Let's say your initial question is "What is your favorite drink? 'Lemonade', 'Soda', 'Juice' or 'Tea'. Display logic allows you to show the question only if the predefined answer is selected in the initial question. Hence, the logic will look like this: 'Display this question if the following conditions are met: 'Tea' is selected.

Setting up display logic is similar to adding skip logic.

Select the question you want to display based on a respondent’s answer, then click Display logic.

In the Display logic window, click Add condition.

Select Questions from the list of available condition types.

Select the survey question you want to use as the condition.

Select the appropriate operator based on the question type and the condition you want to apply. Available operators may include is, is not, is greater than, and is less than.

Enter or select the value that should trigger the display condition. For example, you can configure the condition to display a question when the response to “How likely are you to recommend us to a friend or colleague?” is greater than 7.

Click Save.

The configured condition appears above the question, showing when the question will be displayed.

NOTE:

Display logic can cause questions to be hidden based on the configured conditions. As a result, a mandatory question may be skipped when its display conditions are not met, and a response may not be recorded for that question.

Set up display logic using a contact custom field

The current Display logic window also includes Custom field as a condition type. Use a custom field when you want to display a survey question based on a contact's custom property rather than their response to another survey question. This lets you show specific questions based on information stored in a contact’s profile, such as their account details, dates, or other custom properties.

NOTE:

Display logic based on custom fields is supported only when the survey is distributed through a survey campaign. It does not apply to anonymous links or survey previews.

  • In the survey builder, select the question for which you want to configure display logic.

  • Click Display logic in the right panel.

  • Click Add condition and select Custom field.

  • Select the contact custom field you want to use as the condition. Then, select an operator, enter the value for the condition, and click Save.

For example, you can display a question only when a contact's Amount Paid custom field is greater than 100.

  • The configured condition is displayed above the question. The question is shown to contacts only when their custom field value meets the specified condition.

Important considerations for contact custom fields

  • The custom fields available in display logic are contact custom fields associated with the contact, not survey custom fields.

  • Custom-field-based display logic is evaluated using the information associated with the contact when the survey is distributed.

  • The condition cannot be evaluated in the survey preview because the preview does not have a contact's custom field values.

  • To test the condition, distribute the survey to a contact through a survey campaign. You can also use Quick Send, provided the contact already exists in Birdeye with the required custom field information.

FAQs

What is the difference between display logic and skip logic?

Display logic: Displays a question when the configured conditions are met. Conditions can be based on responses to survey questions or contact custom fields.

Skip logic: Moves the respondent to a different question based on the answer to a selected question, allowing you to skip questions that aren't relevant to them.

When should I use display logic?

  • When you want to show or hide questions based on a respondent's previous answers.

  • When you want to show questions based on information stored in a contact's custom fields.

  • When you want respondents to see only questions relevant to them.

  • When you want to create a more personalized survey experience.

Why doesn't custom-field display logic work in Preview?

Survey previews do not contain a contact's custom field values, so custom-field conditions cannot be evaluated in Preview. To test the logic, distribute the survey to a contact through a survey campaign or use Quick send with an existing contact whose custom field information is available.

Can I use contact custom fields with display logic?

Yes. You can use contact custom fields to define conditions for displaying survey questions. Custom-field-based display logic is supported when the survey is distributed through a survey campaign. It does not apply to anonymous links or survey previews.
